CHIP

Dude, You’re Made Out of a Dell

When I moved to New York I started working with computer chips. Mostly I make mixed media pieces with the hardware though I’ve built sculptures as well. The conceptual and visual framework of the chips is bilayered. The surface of the chips evoke various sources of suffering, as well as express the ways we cope with pain. They show the kinds of chaos coping can’t cure.

The chips themselves, the hardware, exemplify the kind of order we seek. Humans have a need to believe in the existence of a greater purpose and direction. They need to believe that there is– overall– more order than chaos. The tension created by the two layers conveys the truth of our experience: there is both order and chaos, creation and destruction, progress and regress. It’s true that in some respects our species has made improvements, but the dichotomy between these forces remains.
